Depending on which email platform you are migrating from, there are many different flavours of email migration software you can use.
Email Migration software covered in this section includes:
- Binary Tree Tools
- Open Source
- Inware Technologies
- Microsoft Tools
- MigrationWiz – Cloud Based Solution
- Quest Tools
- SaaS Tools
- Toolbox (useful utilities)
The New Product Reviews section aims to provide coverage for any new tools associated with email migrations.
There are the free tools, such as the basic Microsoft Exchange 2003 Migration Wizard, or the more advanced Microsoft Exchange 2007 Transporter Suite. Or you can pay some money for a 3rd Party tool. An example would be the Quest Notes to Exchange Migrator and the Quest GroupWise to Exchange Migrator. Binary Tree also offer enterprise level migration tools similar in functionality to the Quest tools, with a slightly different focus. My advice is to evaluate the tools available from these providers to find which ones suit your particular needs. Both Binary Tree and Quest are rapidly developing their products to meet the demand from customers who wish to migrate off Domino onto Exchange 2010.
I have performed successful email migrations using the Microsoft tools, and using the Quest tools. And a combination of both. There will be constraints as to which tool you can use — the most common being financial. As a rule, you get more features the more you pay, and certainly the Quest products are very powerful and offer more flexibility and features.
Where possible, you should use the standard Microsoft tools – for credibility and support. But be open-minded when it comes to the migration component you use. A quick search on Google on Microsoft Transporter Suite will bring up actual experiences of using the product. Compared to established products such as Quest, the Transporter Suite appears to have many reported problems. In addition, Quest release frequent updates of versions of their products, whereas Microsoft appear to not be releasing frequent updates of Transporter Suite.
If you use Microsoft Transporter Suite for the inter-connect component, and Quest for the actual mailbox migration then you also have the luxury of using Microsoft Transporter Suite as a backup tool for mailbox migration.
Transporter Suite is not being developed for Exchange 2010 use directly, but still can be used via an Exchange 2007 presence. This will generate additional effort to coexist the two platforms but may be more cost effective than purchasing 3rd party software to help.
It would still be preferable to be able to carry out an evaluation of different email migration tools as part of your project and make an informed decision based on the outcome. You can then refer to this evaluation if someone questions your choice of migration tool, or migration tools.
I am happy to help you select the best migration software for your email migration project.
