Migrating Domino to Exchange 2003 is a common scenario for email migrations, and Microsoft provide technology to assist you.
For a migration to Exchange 2003 you can use the Microsoft Connector for Lotus Notes to provide mail flow and directory synchronisation. And a partner Connector for calendar free/busy co-existence. It is advisable to use a native SMTP connector to handle the mail flow as this will be more robust. The Exchange Migration Wizard can then be used to migrate the mailboxes. All of the above will be at no additional cost.
However, by using the Exchange Migration Wizard you only get basic mailbox migration, with many Lotus Notes features not migrated, which may be a problem. Not migrated are:
- Lotus Notes Archives
- Lotus Notes Personal Address Books
You may wish to consider using a 3rd Party Migration tool to allow for migration of these items. Quest software will migrate this data for you, at a cost.
The best migration method to use is the same as for Novell GroupWise. Build the new email system, connect to Lotus Notes, re-route the internet mail through Exchange, migrate the mailboxes.
